Every year around this time, someone emails us the same question. They've narrowed their holiday trip down to two options, a nice resort or a private villa, and they want to know which one is better.
It's worth stopping there, because it's the wrong question. Not because the answer is obvious, but because the real decision isn't villa versus resort at all. It's something you don't realize you're choosing until you're already there, standing in a hotel lobby on the twenty-sixth, wondering where everyone went.
We've watched many families make this call. Some got it right. Others spent the best week of their year managing things they'd assumed were handled. Here's what it actually comes down to.
What a Resort Does Well
Let's be fair to Cabo's resorts, because they've earned their reputation for a reason.
You check in and everything works. There's a front desk when something goes wrong, a restaurant downstairs when nobody feels like deciding, someone cleaning the room while you're at the beach. The air conditioning breaks, you call, it's someone else's problem. You never think about any of it.
For a couple traveling alone, a short trip where you mostly want to be poolside and left alone, that's hard to beat. A good resort takes the decisions off your plate, and sometimes that's the whole point of getting away. So when someone tells us it's just the two of them for a long weekend, no real agenda, we've told them a good resort might be the easier call. Sometimes it is.
Though not always, even then. We've had couples book an entire villa just for the privacy, which tells you something about what this decision is really about. It isn't the size of your group. It's what you actually want from the week.
Where the Resort Falls Apart at the Holidays
This is the part we watch happen every holiday season.
You came to be with your family. That was the whole point. Then you get there, and everyone scatters. Your parents are in a room on the fourth floor. Your sister's family is down the hall or in a different building entirely. The kids want to be together and can't, not without someone walking them back and forth. By nine at night, everyone has retreated into their own room with their own TV, and the together part you flew everyone down for is happening in twenty-minute increments by the pool.
And the pool is its own situation over the holidays. The good chairs are gone by seven in the morning, claimed with a towel by someone who isn't even out there yet. The restaurant you wanted is booked because everyone else staying there wants it too. Christmas dinner is a set menu at a seating time the hotel chose, not you.
None of this is the resort failing at its job. It's the resort doing exactly what a resort does: serving a few hundred people at once, fairly, on a schedule. That works beautifully for a couple. It works against you when what you wanted was one table, one house, everyone under the same roof, on your own time.
The holidays are the one week of the year when being scattered across a resort is the opposite of what you came for.
The Rental That Fixes One Problem and Creates Another
So you skip the resort. You find a big, beautiful house on a rental site, everyone under one roof, and the scattering problem is solved.
For many trips, that's the right answer, and we'd tell you so.
But over the holidays, in a house you're running yourself, something shifts. The privacy came back, and the work came with it. Someone has to shop for a family of twelve and cook Christmas dinner, which means missing most of the day in the kitchen while everyone else is outside. And when something needs attention, a delivery that never came, a question about the villa, a plan that changed at the last minute, it lands on you to sort out, on the one week you were hoping not to be in charge of anything.
That's the gap. And it's the gap most people don't see until they're in it, halfway through a trip that was supposed to feel like a break.
The Option Most People Don't Know to Look For

Honestly, it depends on the trip.
If it's you and your partner for a few nights, book a good resort. You'll be looked after, you won't lift a finger, and you don't need a whole house to enjoy a quiet getaway. We mean that.
If you're on a budget and your family is happy to handle most of the week yourselves, you can rent a villa and keep it simple. Our villas start around $1,000 a night, and each one already includes the things that set the tone from the moment you land: your ride from the airport, a dedicated concierge, and Mexican appetizers with margaritas for the adults, something cold for the kids, waiting when you walk in. The ongoing chef, the full butler service, the boat days, those you add only if you want them. Plenty of families keep it to the essentials and have a great week. We like those trips too.
